BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The New York City Owner’s Guide
If your BFT keypad stopped accepting codes or the intercom crackles when a visitor calls, we can usually repair or replace the failed part the same day. Most BFT keypad and intercom repairs in New York City run $185 to $480 installed, depending on whether we fix the board in place or swap the unit. The typical call starts with a homeowner noticing the keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move, or a delivery person saying they pressed the call button and heard nothing but static.
What we find most often in New York City is moisture intrusion. BFT keypads and intercom panels sit outside in rain, snow, and salt air from the East River or the Hudson, and the factory gaskets dry out after a few seasons. Water gets behind the membrane, oxidizes the contact points, and suddenly the code works three times out of ten. If the failure is corrosion on a keypad we can frequently restore it; if the board itself is gone, we replace it with the correct BFT-spec part and photograph everything before we leave.
Call (928) 260-0864 and we’ll diagnose it over the phone in about ten minutes, then hand you a written price before any work starts.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
We work on the full BFT residential and light-commercial line, but the keypads and intercoms we see most often in New York City are the BFT Mitto series (Mitto 2, Mitto 4), the BFT T-Box, the BFT Mikra, and the older BFT RIGEL and BFT CLONIX keypads. The intercom side is usually a BFT Ultra or a BFT Opera module paired with the gate board. Each series uses a different mounting footprint and a different wire count from the gate operator, and that’s where the first layer of compatibility gets decided.
Here’s the part most owners don’t know: BFT made two physical generations of the Mitto keypad that look nearly identical from the front. The older unit takes a 5-wire hookup and the newer one takes 3 wires, and if you wire a 3-wire keypad to an older BFT control board using a generic aftermarket harness, the gate will open once and then lock out. We stock both harness types on the truck and check the control board revision before we touch anything. For OEM versus aftermarket, BFT’s own keypads are worth the extra cost on the Mitto and T-Box lines because the aftermarket copies rarely survive a New York winter without condensation behind the lens. On the bulkier commercial keypads, a quality aftermarket equivalent like a rebranded CAME or FAAC-compatible unit can be fine, but we’ll tell you plainly which one belongs on your gate.
Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

- The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t open. This usually means the keypad is sending the signal but the gate board isn’t recognizing it. The problem often sits in the wire run between the keypad and the operator, or in a failed relay on the keypad’s own board.
- The code works sometimes and not others. That intermittent behavior is a classic corrosion symptom. Moisture inside the keypad housing bridges the contact points on humid days, then dries out when the sun hits the panel. We see this constantly in New York City townhouse neighborhoods where the keypad faces the street and takes direct weather.
- The intercom audio is crackly or dead one way. You might hear the visitor, but they can’t hear you, or vice versa. On BFT intercoms this usually traces to a failing audio transformer or a corroded speaker terminal. It’s repairable if the board is intact.
- Buttons feel mushy or don’t click. The membrane overlay on BFT keypads wears out and loses its tactile snap. When the membrane rips, moisture gets straight to the PCB underneath. Replacing the membrane early is a $40 to $80 fix; waiting for the board to corrode turns it into $300 plus.
- The gate opens by itself or won’t stop. This is less common, but a failing keypad relay can flutter and send phantom open commands. If you’ve noticed the gate moving with no one at the keypad, that’s a safety issue and we’d want to look at it same day.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, expect to pay $185 to $480 for a BFT keypad or intercom repair, installed. The low end is a membrane replacement or a relay swap; the high end is a full keypad or intercom unit replacement with a new harness and a control board reprogram. The parts themselves range from roughly $90 to $320 depending on the BFT model, and labor typically adds another $95 to $160. We don’t charge New York City “premium” rates for crossing a bridge or parking a van; the price is the price.
What’s included: the part, the install, programming the codes back in, and a written record of the part number installed. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the full repair. If the keypad fails again inside a year, we fix it at no charge. And under Haven Standard Clause 1, you get the price in writing before we touch a tool, so there’s no surprise invoice at the end.
DIY or Call Us?

The honest split: if your BFT keypad just needs a membrane overlay swapped, a careful owner with a small screwdriver can usually handle it in 30 minutes. But if the failure is electrical, if you’re seeing corrosion, or if the gate itself is behaving unpredictably, do not open the housing yourself. BFT keypads carry low-voltage wiring, but a short from a corroded board can send voltage back to the control board and take out the gate operator, which turns a $250 keypad repair into a $900 board replacement. These units sit outside and they fail in ways that are not obvious to people who don’t work on them daily.
Our rule is simple: Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind. We’ll give you a written diagnosis, a written price, and we’ll leave you a photo log of what we did. Call (928) 260-0864 and we’ll talk through what’s happening.
FAQs
A properly sealed BFT keypad lasts 5 to 8 years in New York City before weather takes a toll. Units facing south take more UV and fail faster on the membrane; units in shaded entryways often last longer. The factory gasket is the weak point, not the electronics. Call (928) 260-0864 if yours is showing its age.
Yes, we repair BFT keypads whenever the board is salvageable. Membrane replacement, relay swaps, and wire repairs are all common fixes we do on site. We only recommend replacement when corrosion has reached the PCB or the board has failed electrically. Estimates are free.
A straightforward BFT keypad or intercom replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes on site. If we need to re-run wiring from the keypad to the gate operator, it can stretch to two hours. Most New York City jobs are done the same day we diagnose the issue.
We stock BFT Mitto, T-Box, Mikra, and RIGEL keypads, plus intercom modules and haresses for all of them. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems if you have a mixed setup on the property. Call (928) 260-0864 and we’ll tell you exactly what we have on the truck.
