Mighty Mule Hinge & Roller Replacement: The New York City Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible hinge and roller replacements across New York City, with most single-leaf hinge replacements running $180-$340 installed and roller replacements typically $120-$260 installed depending on the model and whether the mounting hardware survived. Same-day service is available in most cases when we have the part on the truck. Most owners discover the problem as a gate that groans on every cycle, sags visibly at the free end, or starts dragging against the driveway. By the time you hear it, the bearing surface or hinge pin has usually been wearing for months, and the gate’s weight has been quietly working against the motor the whole time.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
Mighty Mule has shipped several hinge and roller configurations over the years, and they are not all interchangeable. The FM200, FM350, FM500, and MM260/MM360 series single-swing gates use a barrel hinge with a fixed pin, while the larger MM371W, MM562, and MM572 dual-swing kits use a heavier hinge with a greasable zerk fitting on the higher-end models. The XL series and E-Z Gate units use a different hinge barrel diameter entirely. Before ordering, look at the hinge body itself: Mighty Mule stamps the part number on the hinge leaf or on the plastic cap. If the stamp is gone, measure the barrel diameter. If it is closer to 3/4 inch, you are on the FM/MM series. If it is 1 inch or larger, you are on an XL or heavy-duty unit. We keep both OEM and a quality aftermarket line on the truck. For New York City, our honest recommendation is the aftermarket powder-coated hinge when the gate hangs in salt air near the water, because the finish outlasts the OEM plating by roughly two to three years in those conditions. For everything else, OEM is the right call.
Signs Your Mighty Mule Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

- The gate sags at the latch end. The hinge pin has worn into an oval inside the barrel, and the free end now drops a half inch or more. The motor now has to lift that sag every time it starts a cycle, which shortens the operator’s life.
- You hear a metal-on-metal groan or squeal during travel. The bearing surface inside the hinge has lost its lubrication and is now grinding. Greasing the outside will not reach the wear point. This is the sound of the hinge telling you it is done.
- The gate scrapes the driveway on the swing path. A worn roller lets the gate drop at mid-travel, and concrete wins that fight every time. Left alone, the scrape turns into a bent hinge leaf and a gate that will not close fully.
- The gate binds or jerks partway through the cycle. Roller wear creates a flat spot, and every time that flat spot hits the track the gate hesitates. The motor’s limit switches eventually misread the position and the gate stops short.
- The operator sounds like it is working harder than it used to. That is not your imagination. A dragging hinge or roller adds mechanical resistance the motor is not designed to handle, and in New York City’s stop-start traffic pattern, that resistance burns out boards and gearboxes prematurely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For New York City customers, plan on $180-$340 installed for a single hinge replacement and $120-$260 installed for a roller replacement. The range is driven by three things: whether it is a single or dual leaf gate, whether the mounting bolts snap on removal (common on older steel gates with rusted hardware), and whether the hinge is an OEM or heavy-duty aftermarket unit. The price includes the part, the labor, the removal of the old hardware, and a photo log of everything we touched. You get the written price before we pick up a tool, and that is the price on the invoice when we leave. Every Mighty Mule hinge and roller replacement we install is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the part or the work fails within a year, we make it right at no charge. No argument.
DIY or Call Us?

What an owner can safely do: photograph the hinge and roller assemblies, note the model number from the operator’s control board label, and measure the barrel diameter with a caliper if you own one. That information helps us confirm fitment before we arrive. What goes wrong with DIY on hinge replacement: the gate leaf weighs more than most people expect, and the moment the second hinge bolt comes out, that weight has to go somewhere controlled. We have been called to jobs where a car jack, a stack of pavers, or an owner’s shoulder was holding a 300-pound gate, and the hinge pin was already half sheared. The wrong move with a loaded gate leaf is a fast way to lose fingers or worse. If the hinge is worn enough to need replacement, the safe path is to have a technician unload the gate properly, swap the part, and set the travel limits again. We are at (928) 260-0864, and a live person answers when you call.
FAQs
In New York City, expect roughly 5 to 8 years from a factory hinge before wear becomes measurable, and closer to 3 to 5 years on the roller if the gate has no canopy and takes direct weather. Coastal properties and gates near busy roads with winter salt spray sit at the low end of that range. If you hear the gate start to groan earlier than that, the part was likely under-lubricated from day one. Call (928) 260-0864 and we will tell you whether it is a hinge, a roller, or both, with a written price before any work begins.
In most cases, no. Once the pin has worn the barrel into an oval, the only genuine repair is replacement. Rebushing is possible on some commercial hinges, but the Mighty Mule residential hinges are not built with a replaceable bushing, so the metal itself is the bearing. We will always tell you if yours is the exception. Call (928) 260-0864 and one of our technicians will inspect it on site with photos and an honest answer at no charge for the estimate.
Most single-leaf hinge and roller replacements take 45 to 90 minutes once our technician is on site. A dual-leaf gate with both hinges and both rollers replacing runs closer to two hours. We photograph the work at each stage and leave you with a written record of the part numbers installed and the limit-switch settings we left behind. To schedule the swap, call (928) 260-0864 and we will confirm we have your part on the truck before we set the appointment.
We stock the most common Mighty Mule hinge and roller configurations on our trucks and can usually complete the replacement same-day. The FM200, FM350, FM500, and MM series parts are on board. Less common XL or E-Z Gate hinge sizes may require a quick order, and we will tell you that straight before you schedule so there are no surprises. If you are unsure which part you need, call (928) 260-0864 with your model number and a photo, and we will identify it before we arrive.
