BFT Welding & Fabrication: The New York City Owner’s Guide
BFT welding and fabrication work in New York City typically runs between $280 and $650 when we do it, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked hinge mount, rebuilding a bent gate leaf, or fabricating a custom bracket for an older BFT operator. Most jobs are completed same-day because we stock the common BFT mounting plates, rack clamps, and hinge weldments on our trucks. The way owners usually discover this problem: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the BFT motor strains and throws a torque error, or a weld point finally snaps after a winter of salt and freeze-thaw cycles working on it.
We’re an independent service provider, not a BFT dealer or affiliate. That matters here because we weld and fabricate around the BFT equipment you already own rather than steering you toward a new operator. If the motor is good and the steel is tired, we fix the steel.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
The welding and fabrication work we do falls into three buckets, and the model number on your BFT motor tells us which bucket you’re in. For swing gates, the most common BFT units we fabricate around are the Deimos, Phobos, and Aries series. For sliding gates, it’s the Icaro, Rigel, and Botticelli lines. The part geometry differs: Deimos and Phobos operators use a rectangular mounting plate with a specific bolt spacing, while the Aries series uses a different pivot height that changes how the gate leaf must be built or repaired.
Here’s a compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in New York City: many people have a BFT motor mounted on a gate that was built by a local iron shop, not by BFT. The operator plate says BFT, but the hinge barrels, the leaf frame, and the post brackets were fabricated by whoever installed the original gate in 1998. When that steel fails, there’s no OEM part to order. You need a fabricator who can match the existing steel thickness, weld position, and hinge geometry to what’s already there. We measure the leaf weight, the hinge offset, and the mounting plate dimensions before we cut or weld anything.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for structural welds on gate frames and hinge mounts, we fabricate from raw steel matched to the existing material. For mounting brackets and rack clamps, we’ll use OEM BFT hardware when it’s available and the lead time works, but a properly fabricated aftermarket bracket from 1/4-inch steel plate will outlast the original in New York City conditions because we can account for rust and stress concentration points the factory part doesn’t.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate leaf drags or scrapes on one side. This usually means a hinge barrel has worn or a weld at the hinge-to-frame connection has cracked. The BFT motor keeps pushing against the added resistance, which shortens the operator’s life. We see this most often on gates installed before 2010 with original barrel hinges that were never greased.
- Visible rust bleeding from a weld joint. When rust stains run down from a weld seam, water has gotten into the joint. In New York City’s freeze-thaw cycle, that water freezes, expands, and widens the crack every winter. A weld that looks surface-level is often compromised inside.
- BFT operator throws torque or obstacle errors repeatedly. The motor is telling you it’s working harder than it should. Nine times out of ten on a gate more than 10 years old, the problem is mechanical binding in the gate itself, not the operator. The welding and fabrication on the leaf or rack has distorted over time.
- Gate leaf sag at the latch corner. If there’s a visible drop, measured at the free end of the gate, the frame has either cracked at a corner weld or the hinge post has moved. We check this with a string line and a tape measure before touching the operator.
- Cracked or broken rack clamp on a sliding gate. This is one of the most common failures on BFT sliding gate installs in New York City. The rack clamps that hold the gear rack to the gate frame were often installed with undersized hardware or no isolation pads. When one clamp fails, the rack walks, the gear skips, and the gate lunges. We fabricate reinforced clamps and remount the rack with proper standoff.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what BFT welding and fabrication work costs in New York City when Vance Gate Repair does it. These are installed prices, parts and labor together, and the number you get in writing before we start is the number you pay when we leave.
- Hinge mount repair or rebuild: $280 to $420 per hinge, depending on whether we’re welding reinforcement plates onto the existing hinge or cutting out and replacing the entire barrel assembly.
- Gate frame corner weld repair: $180 to $320. Includes grinding out the failed weld, re-welding, and reinforcing with a gusset plate where the geometry allows.
- Custom BFT mounting plate fabrication: $220 to $390. For situations where the original plate has cracked or the operator is being remounted at a different height.
- Rack clamp replacement and rack straightening (sliding gates): $320 to $520 for a full rack removal, straightening, new fabricated clamps, and proper remounting.
- Full gate leaf rebuild (severe rust or crash damage): $600 and up, depending on the leaf size and whether we’re reusing existing members or replacing sections of the frame.
Every quote includes grinding and surface prep, the weld work itself, rust-inhibiting primer on all affected areas, and a photo record of exactly what we found and what we left. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers our welding and fabrication work: if a weld we made fails within a year, we fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

If you’re asking this question, here’s the honest split. You can safely check the obvious things: is the gate visibly sagging at the free end when it’s closed? Do you see rust staining at any weld? Does the gate wobble when you push on it by hand while the operator is disconnected? Those observations are useful, and you can share them with us on the phone.
Welding gate steel yourself is where we draw a hard line. This is structural work under load. A gate leaf that weighs 300 to 600 pounds is moving on hinges that carry all of that weight plus the force of the BFT operator, hundreds of times a day. A bad weld on a hinge mount doesn’t fail quietly: it drops the gate. In a driveway where kids, cars, or delivery people pass underneath, that’s not a risk we want anyone taking with a weekend welder. We cut out the failed material, weld hot and deep with the right technique for the steel thickness, and we document what we did so you’re not guessing later. Call (928) 260-0864 and we’ll give you a written price before anyone lights a torch.
FAQs
A properly welded hinge mount or frame repair on a BFT-driven gate typically lasts 10 to 15 years in New York City, and the limiting factor is usually the original surrounding steel, not our weld. We’ve pulled welds we made in 2016 that looked factory-fresh while the metal two inches away gave out. If the original gate is already heavily rusted, we’ll tell you that before we weld, because welding to compromised steel is just buying time.
Yes, in most cases on hinges, frame corners, and mounting plates, we grind out the failed weld entirely, re-weld it, and add reinforcement where the geometry allows. If the crack is through a structural member that’s rusted from the inside, a repair is a temporary patch and we’ll say so plainly. The decision comes down to what we find when we open the joint up, and we photograph that process so you can see it too.
Most single-hinge or single-corner BFT welding jobs take 2 to 3 hours on site, including surface prep and primer. A full gate leaf rebuild is a half-day to full-day job. We schedule the work for the same visit whenever possible. Call (928) 260-0864 and we’ll give you a straight answer on timing for your specific gate.
We stock common BFT mounting plates and fabrication steel on our trucks, and we keep OEM rack clamps and hinge hardware for the Deimos, Phobos, Aries, Icaro, Rigel, and Botticelli series in our parts inventory. If your gate is from another brand, we also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls setups. If it’s a non-standard BFT part we don’t have on hand, we fabricate the equivalent on site rather than making you wait on a shipment.
Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind. That’s the way Adrian Vance has run every gate job since 2014, and the welding and fabrication side is no different. If your BFT gate is grinding, sagging, or throwing torque errors, call (928) 260-0864. A live person answers, we’ll talk through what you’re seeing, and we’ll put the price in writing before any work starts.
