BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The New York City Owner’s Guide

Most BFT gate motor replacements in New York City run between $850 and $1,900 installed, depending on the model and whether the arm bracket and mounting plate are still sound. We stock BFT-compatible motors and control boards on our trucks, and in most cases we can have your gate running the same day we diagnose the failure. The usual discovery goes like this: the gate starts moving slower than it did last month, then it hums without moving at all, then one morning it simply will not respond to the remote. That sequence – slow, strain, stop – is the classic BFT motor failure pattern we see across Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx every single week.

We’re an independent gate repair company. We’re not affiliated with BFT, and we don’t steer you toward replacing a motor that can still be repaired. But when the motor is gone, you need a straight answer about what it costs and who can install it correctly. That’s what this page is for.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been building gate operators since the 1980s, and the motor you have depends on when your gate was installed and what style it is. The most common BFT lines we replace in New York City are the Phobos series (swing gates, 24V, widely installed on residential driveway gates in Queens and Staten Island), the Deimos series (higher-torque swing operators for heavier gates), the Botticelli and Rigel sliding gate motors, and the older ICARO and SP series that show up on gates installed before 2010.

The compatibility gotcha with BFT is that motor and control board are matched as a set. A Phobos N motor will not talk to a Phobos NBT board without a specific firmware match, and mixing generations is how we see gates fail again two months after a cheaper repair. When we install a BFT motor replacement, we match the motor to the board and to the gate’s actual weight and travel length. We photograph the motor label, the board revision, and the limit-switch settings before we order or install anything. That record stays with your job file.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for BFT specifically, aftermarket motors are hard to source well. BFT builds its motors to tight torque tolerances, and the aftermarket equivalents we’ve tested run hot or wear the gearbox faster. We install genuine BFT motors unless a customer specifically requests a generic replacement, and then we tell them plainly what warranty tradeoff they’re making.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • The gate moves noticeably slower than it did when it was installed. This is the earliest reliable warning. A BFT motor losing speed means the capacitor is degrading or the gearbox is binding. Both conditions shorten the motor’s life, and both are cheaper to catch early.
  • You hear a hum or buzz from the operator but the gate doesn’t move. That hum is the motor trying to start against a failed capacitor or a seized gear. Do not keep pressing the remote. Every failed start cycle adds electrical stress to the control board.
  • The gate stops halfway and reverses, or stops and stays there. This usually looks like a limit-switch problem, but we’ve measured enough BFT motors to know it’s often the motor’s torque output dropping below what the gate needs mid-travel. The board thinks it hit an obstruction, but the real cause is a tired motor.
  • You have to reset the breaker or the BFT control board more than once a month. Intermittent trips on a 24V BFT system often point to the motor windings shorting as they heat up. That’s not a nuisance; that’s a motor in late-stage failure.
  • One side of a dual-swing gate lags behind the other. BFT dual-gate systems run two motors in sequence. If one is slow, that motor is failing. The fix is replacing the weak motor, not adjusting the timing to hide the gap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A BFT swing gate motor replacement in New York City typically lands between $850 and $1,400 installed for a single Phobos-class operator, while heavy-duty Deimos replacements or sliding-gate Rigel motors run from $1,200 to $1,900. The range comes down to three things: the torque rating of the motor your gate requires, whether the arm bracket and mounting plate survived intact, and whether the control board needs to be matched or replaced at the same time.

Here’s what the price includes, every time:

  • The correct BFT motor for your gate’s weight and travel length
  • Labor to remove the old motor, install the new one, and set the limit switches
  • Full travel testing and adjustment of the reversing safety (photo-eye or edge)
  • A written record of the part number, the motor serial number, and photos of the install
  • The 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about the replacement isn’t right within a year, we fix it. No argument, no fee.

The price you’re quoted is the price you pay. We hand you the written quote before the job starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. You’ll never get a surprise invoice from us.

BFT Motor Replacement Typical Installed Price
Phobos-class swing motor, single gate $850 - $1,400
Deimos-class swing motor, heavy gate $1,200 - $1,900
Rigel sliding gate motor $1,200 - $1,800
Control board replacement (if matched at same time) $280 - $550 additional

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

BFT motors run on 24V DC, which is safer to handle than household line voltage, but there’s still a real hazard here: the capacitor inside the motor housing holds a charge even after power is cut, and touching the wrong terminal will give you a serious jolt. We’ve also seen DIY motor swaps where the travel limits were never properly set, and the gate drove itself off the hinge or crushed the arm bracket. That doesn’t mean you can’t check anything yourself.

You can safely do this: check for power at the outlet, note whether the green LED on the BFT control board is lit, and check whether the manual release handle is fully engaged. Those three checks tell us a lot before we even arrive. What you should not do is open the motor housing to test the capacitor, attempt to adjust the limit switches by hand, or swap the motor without matching the board revision. Those are the jobs where DIY costs more than the service call.

If your BFT motor is showing any of the signs above, call us at (928) 260-0864. We’ll diagnose it, hand you a written price, and if the motor is done, replace it the right way – with the matched part, set limits, and a photo record when we leave.
