FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The New York City Owner’s Guide

We stock FAAC-compatible fabrication parts and perform on-site welding for broken gate hinges, cracked operator mounts, bent arm brackets, and failed weld joints across New York City. Most welded repairs on FAAC gates run $340-$680 installed, and we carry the common bracket plates, hinge reinforcements, and mounting tabs on our trucks for same-day repair. Owners usually discover the failure one of two ways: the gate starts dragging on the ground or the operator whines and stalls mid-cycle because a weld tore loose from the gate leaf.

In New York City, where gate frames sit on damp concrete pads and road salt rides in on car tires six months a year, weld failures happen at predictable points. The bottom hinge welds corrode from standing water, the operator mounting plate shears under repeated torque, and the cantilever arm brackets crack at the weld toes. This page covers exactly what fails, what it costs, and how we match the repair to your FAAC model.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

This covers the full range of FAAC swing and slide gate hardware we see in the field: the 390, 400, 412, 415, 422, 750, 760, S418, S450, S700H, S800H, C720, C721, and 884 series operators, along with the supporting hinge sets, arm assemblies, and mounting hardware. The welding itself is rarely the issue. It’s what the welded part attaches to that determines compatibility.

Here’s the gotcha most New York City owners hit: FAAC uses metric-dimensioned mounting plates and arm brackets that don’t line up with the off-the-shelf steel you’d buy at a hardware store. The bolt hole spacing on a 400-series operator plate is 160mm center-to-center. The 750 and S800 series use a 200mm spread. If you weld a new plate on with the wrong spacing, the motor bolts in crooked and eats its own gearbox within a year. We jig the new plate to the actual operator before welding so the holes land exactly where the motor expects them.

On an OEM-vs-aftermarket decision: for welded steel brackets, hinge leafs, and mounting tabs, a quality aftermarket piece made from A36 or better structural steel works fine. FAAC doesn’t manufacture these as precision parts, they’re cut and drilled steel. Where we insist on OEM or exact-spec is anything that carries load through a bushing or pivot, like the lower hinge pin assembly on a heavy gate. That’s a machined part, and an undersized aftermarket pin will wallow out the hinge bore in a season. In our shop, the rule is simple: if it spins or carries weight, match the spec. If it just bolts on, good steel beats branding.

Vance Gate Repair is an independent service provider and not affiliated with FAAC. We stock FAAC-compatible parts alongside LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, Mighty Mule, BFT, and the other major brands we service.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • Gate drags or scrapes on the driveway. A broken bottom hinge weld lets the leaf drop a quarter inch or more. The gate looks fine at eye level, but the corner grinds a line into the concrete. The weld didn’t fail all at once; it fatigue-cracked over months of opening cycles.
  • Operator strains or buzzes mid-cycle. When the mounting plate shifts because a weld tore, the motor fights the misalignment. You’ll hear the operator struggle exactly where the gate used to move smoothly. The extra load beats up the internal bushings and shortens motor life every time the gate cycles.
  • Visible crack at a weld joint. A hairline crack at the weld toe, especially with rust staining around it, is a sign the joint is working loose. On painted gates the crack opens as a zigzag line in the finish. Once a weld toe cracks, water gets in and the steel corrodes from inside the joint.
  • Gate leaf sags when pushed by hand. A fully open gate you can lift half an inch or more tells you the hinge barrel or its weld to the post has worn or torn. On FAAC heavy leafs, the hinge plate is welded to the post mounting, and this joint takes every cycle of gate weight.
  • Arm bracket looks pulled away from the gate frame. The cantilever arm or the operator’s attachment bracket is bolted to a plate that’s welded to the gate face. When that plate peels, the bolts stay tight while the whole bracket drifts, putting angular load on the operator shaft and eventually snapping the arm or stripping the gear.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In New York City, a small FAAC bracket or hinge tab weld runs $340-$450. A full hinge replacement with fabricated plates runs $480-$600. Replacing and rewelding an operator mounting plate typically costs $550-$680. The range depends on whether we’re cutting out old steel, fabricating a new plate on site, or just grinding and rewelding the existing joint.

Repair Type Typical Installed Cost
Single bracket or tab weld $340 - $450
Hinge leaf replacement (one hinge) $420 - $520
Operator mounting plate fabrication & weld $550 - $680
Full hinge set rebuild (both hinges, fabricated plates) $900 - $1,300

Every price is written and handed to you before any work starts. No surprise invoice at the end. The quote covers cutting out the failed steel, fabricating the replacement plate or bracket, welding it, grinding smooth, and primer-and-paint on the repaired area. Two coats of rust-inhibiting primer and a top coat matched to your gate color, because bare weld in New York City weather starts rusting before the week is out. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or the fabrication isn’t right, we make it right at no charge within one full year.

Here’s the safety truth: welding on a live FAAC gate is not a weekend project. The gate leaf weighs hundreds of pounds. If the hinge weld you’re trying to repair gives way while the leaf is moved, it can come down fast and pin someone. The capacitors inside FAAC operators hold enough charge to deliver a serious shock even with the breaker off, and an improperly welded mounting plate will twist the operator and strip the gearbox, and then the repair cost just doubled.

What you can safely do is identify the problem and photograph it. Check whether the crack is at the weld or in the surrounding steel. Wiggle the gate by hand while it’s off the operator and see what moves. Take photos of the label plate on the operator so we bring the right bolt pattern. Then call us at (928) 260-0864. Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind. That’s how every job is run here.
